European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlines strategic response to U.S. trade policies while emphasizing the need for single market reforms.
In a decisive move against potential trade conflicts with the United States, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has articulated a multifaceted strategy aimed at bolstering the European Union's internal market and trade relationships.
Speaking to the European Parliament, von der Leyen stressed the importance of mitigating the impact of tariffs introduced under the U.S. administration, led by former President
Donald Trump.
Von der Leyen underscored that the EU is committed to maintaining open lines of negotiation with the United States, asserting, "Our goal is a negotiated solution." She highlighted that while the EU prefers to avoid retaliatory measures, it has prepared a robust plan to respond should the need arise.
Alongside this diplomatic stance, von der Leyen's strategy emphasizes the diversification of trade partnerships as a proactive measure against U.S. protectionism.
Under her direction, the EU has made strides in establishing significant trade agreements, including those with the Mercosur countries—Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay—and a refreshed agreement with Mexico.
Furthermore, the EU is on track to finalize a free trade agreement with India by the end of this year.
Central to von der Leyen's address was the urgent need for reforming the EU's single market, which she believes is crucial for enhancing the bloc's competitiveness.
She cited an analysis from the International Monetary Fund, indicating that existing internal market barriers impose tariffs equivalent to 45 percent on manufacturing and 110 percent on services, significantly hampering EU economic performance.
"The European Parliament has always worked hard to complete the single market.
Now we have a generational opportunity to get it done," von der Leyen stated, calling upon all political factions within the Parliament to unite for reform.
She has directed Executive Vice President Séjourné to develop actionable proposals aimed at dismantling these barriers and preventing the emergence of new ones, aligning the EU's internal structures to better support its trade ambitions.
As part of her broader strategy, von der Leyen reiterated the need for a collective European response to U.S. tariffs, emphasizing that the EU must leverage its unity to address external economic pressures effectively.
The emphasis on collaboration within the EU’s institutional framework reflects a renewed commitment to overcoming internal challenges while navigating the complexities of international trade.
