European Industry Leaders Urge EU to Enhance Technological Sovereignty

Airbus, Dassault, and over 90 firms advocate for 'Buy European' policies and a sovereign infrastructure fund to bolster EU's tech independence.
In a concerted effort to strengthen Europe's technological autonomy, a coalition of over 90 European companies and industry groups, including aerospace giant Airbus and software firm Dassault Systèmes, has called upon the European Commission to implement measures promoting homegrown technology within the bloc's digital infrastructure.

In a letter addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and tech sovereignty chief Henna Virkkunen, the signatories emphasized the necessity for Europe to achieve greater technological independence across all layers of its critical digital infrastructure.

The coalition proposed the introduction of 'Buy European' requirements for government procurement to stimulate demand for domestically produced technology.

Additionally, they advocated for the establishment of a sovereign infrastructure fund aimed at supporting investments in capital-intensive sectors such as microchips and quantum technology.

The letter highlighted concerns over Europe's reliance on non-European technology providers, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions affecting global supply chains.

The signatories underscored the importance of a coordinated and strategic approach to ensure the competitiveness and security of Europe's digital landscape.

This appeal aligns with broader EU initiatives aimed at enhancing technological sovereignty.

Recently, President von der Leyen announced that €150 billion in EU defense loans should be allocated to European-made weapons to bolster the continent's security and support its arms industry.

This move is part of a larger strategy to reduce dependence on non-European defense suppliers and strengthen the EU's internal capabilities.

The collective call from these industry leaders reflects a growing consensus on the need for proactive measures to secure Europe's position in the global technological arena.

As the EU continues to navigate challenges related to digital infrastructure and security, such collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Europe's technological landscape.
