Community Engagement Initiative Launched in Turnhout to Connect Young People

Weekly gatherings at the Warande Cultural Center aim to foster connections among local youth.
A new community initiative aimed at bringing young people together kicked off on October 31 at the Warande Cultural Center in Turnhout.

Spearheaded by Adam, a 20-year-old local student, the project has drawn in 15 participants for its inaugural gathering, which focuses on social interaction through games and discussions every Wednesday from 12 PM to 6 PM.

During the launch event, attendees enjoyed a welcoming atmosphere, engaging in various activities designed to facilitate connections among participants.

Adam expressed satisfaction with the success of the first meeting, noting the community's positive reception and enthusiasm.

The initiative seeks to establish a regular meeting point for young individuals to unwind and build relationships.

Adam shared his personal motivations for starting the project, highlighting his desire to create a safe space for youth in Turnhout.

Reflecting on his own experiences, he said, "I have a bad past and have done stupid things," emphasizing the importance of providing alternatives for young people to engage in constructive activities.

He notes the absence of spaces for hanging out during his youth and aims to transform Warande into a welcoming environment.

Plans for future events are already in place, as Adam intends to continue hosting gatherings and involving attendees in the planning process.

This approach not only combats the issue of loitering but also empowers youth to contribute to their community.

The project is positioned as a response to local concerns around youth engagement, aiming to foster a sense of belonging among participants.

Adam stated, "If they need to talk, I’m here to listen," reinforcing his commitment to supporting young people in Turnhout.
