BAGHDAD – Iraq has reopened the Qaim border crossing with Syria, facilitating both commercial and passenger travel between the two nations.

A spokesperson from the Iraqi Border Administration announced on Saturday that the crossing is now operational following joint security assessments conducted by Iraqi and Syrian officials.

The decision to reopen the Qaim crossing aligns with attempts by both countries to normalize relations and strengthen economic ties.

This reopening is seen as significant, marking over three months since Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani's call for the resumption of cross-border commerce during his visit to Baghdad.

The first Syrian truck successfully passed through the crossing after inspection, according to a statement from the Iraqi border crossings office.

The resumption of passenger movement is also part of the reopening efforts, aimed at alleviating travel burdens for Iraqi citizens.

Mayor Turki al-Mahallawi of al-Qaim emphasized that the crossing will serve as a strategic corridor for trade between Iraq and Syria.

The recent actions are also indicative of improved diplomatic relations under the new Syrian government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who has made efforts to restore trade and diplomatic links with neighboring countries.

The Qaim crossing had been closed in December 2024 due to security issues arising from clashes in the area and the withdrawal of Syrian government forces following a rebel offensive that threatened the stability of the Assad regime.

During this period, a notable number of around 1,500 Syrian soldiers reportedly crossed into Iraq and surrendered, leading to heightened security measures at the border, which was monitored and fortified by Iraqi forces.

The closure was implemented in response to the escalating instability from rebel advances in Syria.
