Anthony Dumarey Opts Against Appeal Following Non-Appointment as Mayor of Oudenburg

Decision influenced by judicial investigation into potential conflict of interest and aim to avoid prolonged uncertainty for the municipality.
OUDENBURG - Anthony Dumarey, a prominent political figure in Oudenburg, has decided not to file an appeal with the Council of State concerning his non-appointment as mayor.

His decision follows the refusal of Flemish Minister of Internal Affairs Hilde Crevits to appoint him, citing an ongoing judicial investigation into a possible conflict of interest related to his dual roles as mayor and real estate agent.

Dumarey previously served as mayor but faced scrutiny and legal challenges stemming from an audit conducted in August 2023, which highlighted significant issues regarding his conduct.

The audit revealed that Dumarey had allowed several developments linked to his real estate business to proceed despite receiving contrary advice from environmental authorities.

Accusations included the disclosure of confidential information to architects involved in these projects.

Consequently, these developments led to an investigation by the judiciary into potential conflicts of interest and breaches of professional secrecy.

Having received the highest preference votes in local elections and the majority of votes in the chamber of representatives, Dumarey was denied the mayoralty once again.

Despite his efforts to establish his candidacy, including co-signing numerous recommendations related to the audit and investigation by local authorities, the Council of State upheld Crevits’s decision, reaffirming that his appointment would be inappropriate.

Following a prolonged period of reflection and legal consultation, Dumarey chose not to pursue an annulment appeal as it could lead to enduring uncertainty for the municipality.

In his statement, Dumarey emphasized his commitment to the well-being of Oudenburg and indicated his intention to support the current municipal council as a councillor, asserting that he has contributed significantly to local governance since 1994.

In light of Dumarey’s non-appointment, Romina Vanhooren, who was the second most preferred candidate from his party, has been installed as the new mayor of Oudenburg.

This change follows a pattern of leadership challenges within local government and reflects ongoing concerns about governance and accountability in the region.
