RONSE - A runaway horse caused injuries to three individuals during the Ronse Fiertelommegang procession, resulting in them being taken to the hospital, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The incident occurred during the annual event, which involves the transport of a shrine containing the relics of Saint Hermes, the patron saint of Ronse, over a distance of 32.6 kilometers.

This historical procession takes place on the first Sunday after Pentecost and has roots dating back to 1089, drawing large crowds of participants, including both walkers and riders.

The horse began to rear and bolt unexpectedly along the Ommegangstraat, a route at the border of Maarkedal and Ronse.

Authorities reported that the horse may have bitten its own tongue, which triggered its sudden distress.

As a result of the incident, one adult and two children sustained minor injuries when struck by the horse and were transported to the hospital for observation and treatment.

Following the incident, the cyclist involved in the procession reportedly passed a breathalyzer test, indicating no impairment.

The rider expressed significant distress over the events that unfolded.

In response to the incident, event organizers are exploring measures to improve animal control at future processions.

These measures may involve enlisting the support of specialized organizations to provide resources such as veterinarians and trained responders, with an emphasis on ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both participants and animals during major events.
