Iranian officials emphasize defensive posture amid escalating military clashes with Israel.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that Tehran has no intention of allowing its conflict with Israel to escalate into neighboring countries unless provoked.
He characterized Iran’s military responses as self-defensive, asserting that they are a reaction to external aggressions.
Araqchi condemned Israel’s recent military actions, including airstrikes on the South Pars gas field, as 'a blatant act of aggression.' He warned that widening the conflict into the Persian Gulf would be strategically misguided, alleging that such moves aim to extend warfare beyond Iranian borders.
Recent military exchanges between Israel and Iran have intensified, leading to heightened tensions in the region.
U.S. President
Donald Trump expressed a belief that the conflict could be resolved easily, meanwhile cautioning Iran against targeting American interests.
Israel has articulated that its military operations aim to impede Iran's progression toward nuclear armament and to address perceived threats from Iran’s ballistic missile program.
Araqchi accused Israel of obstructing ongoing nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States, which had been projected to yield a significant agreement.
The sixth round of discussions was reportedly cancelled due to the recent hostilities.
He asserted that Israel's military actions would not have occurred without what he referred to as U.S. support and implied complicity.
Araqchi claimed that for the U.S. to demonstrate sincere intentions in diplomatic negotiations, it must publicly condemn Israel's strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
In terms of casualties and damage, Iranian officials reported that Israeli attacks resulted in 78 fatalities on the first day and additional casualties on subsequent days, including significant loss of life from a missile strike on a residential building in Tehran.
Reports stated that out of those who died in this incident, 29 were children.
Iranian sources also indicated that strikes targeted the Shahran oil facility in Tehran, though they maintained that control over the situation was established.
An Israeli assault on a nearby oil refinery led to a fire, while there were also claims of minor damage inflicted on Iran’s defense ministry headquarters.
The situation continues to evolve as both nations navigate a complex landscape of military engagement and diplomatic relations.
