The election of Karol Nawrocki as President of Poland has provoked a significant response regarding the country’s abortion laws, particularly among reproductive rights advocates.

Nawrocki, a conservative figure, has emphasized his opposition to any legislative measures that would expand legal access to abortion, particularly reforms proposed by Donald Tusk’s centrist coalition, which aimed to reinstate the so-called abortion compromise.

This compromise would allow abortions under specific circumstances, including cases of rape, severe fetal abnormalities, or where the mother's life is at risk.

Nawrocki has publicly expressed his views on abortion, framing the issue within the context of Poland's demographic challenges, stating, "Promoting anti-values or a culture of death rather than life is a problem that affects Poland’s demographic situation.” His election has led to disillusionment among activists seeking reform in reproductive rights, many of whom perceive the political climate as increasingly hostile towards their causes.

Since the introduction of Poland's effective abortion ban in 2021, which permits termination only in cases of rape, incest, or serious threats to a woman's health, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has highlighted the severe consequences of this legal framework, linking it to avoidable deaths and suffering.

Following the election, organizations like the Abortion Dream Team have articulated their frustration, stating that Nawrocki's presidency reflects a rejection of human rights considerations.

The group remarked after the election results that, “Poland has just elected an extreme nationalist as president.

The majority decided that human rights can wait.” This sentiment underscores a widespread disappointment among advocates who had hoped for legislative progress following the elections.

Despite Nawrocki's firm anti-abortion stance, an Ipsos poll indicated that he garnered substantial support from women, with approximately 47.2% of female voters choosing him, alongside 55.5% of male voters.

Some women expressed their personal coping strategies for navigating the restrictive reproductive landscape.

With travel to nearby countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic, or Slovakia often necessary for those seeking abortions, many rely on clinics abroad for services, which may also assist with logistics and translation.

Additionally, some have turned to organizations that provide abortion pills, although these methods carry legal risks.

In Warsaw, a new facility named Abotak has opened, coinciding with symbolic gestures of support from left-wing politicians who delivered abortion pills and emergency contraceptives to the clinic.

These developments illustrate attempts to counterbalance the restrictive legislative environment.

The political defeat of Rafał Trzaskowski, Nawrocki’s opponent and a pro-choice advocate backed by Tusk’s Civic Platform, has prompted introspection among progressives regarding the future of abortion rights in Poland.

Tusk’s government had pledged to legalize abortion up to 12 weeks but faced challenges due to a lack of parliamentary majority and resistance from the outgoing presidency.
