Improved Access to Copper IUDs for Women in Ghent Through New Initiative

The Vzw Luna initiative launches a user-friendly website to enhance access to the highly effective copper IUD for emergency contraception.
GHENT – Access to the copper intrauterine device (IUD), an effective form of emergency contraception, has been notably enhanced in Ghent with the launch of a new website by the women’s health organization Vzw Luna.

The copper IUD, referred to as the emergency coil, is reported to be over 99% effective when inserted within five days of unprotected intercourse, making it a more reliable option compared to emergency contraceptive pills.

The copper IUD not only serves as an immediate solution but also provides long-term birth control, remaining effective for five to ten years depending on its type.

Traditionally, many women have encountered challenges such as long waiting times and insufficient information, complicating access to this contraceptive method.

Carine Vrancken from Vzw Luna highlighted the limitations of the morning-after pill, which is only effective if ovulation has not occurred.

She noted that this can lead to unintended pregnancies, even amongst those who attempt to use emergency contraception.

Vzw Luna operates four abortion centers across Flanders and Brussels, focusing on reproductive health education and resources.

The newly launched website aims to eliminate previous barriers by offering a streamlined process for women to acquire the copper IUD.

It provides comprehensive information regarding the emergency coil and enables users to schedule appointments directly, thereby fostering greater independence in managing their reproductive health.

Cost considerations are also an important aspect of the initiative.

While women over 25 must cover the full cost of the coil and insertion, which can reach up to €150, women under 25 can receive nearly full reimbursement, thereby alleviating financial burdens for this demographic.

This financial structure supports the notion that the copper IUD is a cost-effective option, allowing for both immediate emergency protection and extended birth control.

Vzw Luna emphasizes the necessity of accurate information regarding IUDs, as the insertion procedure can be painful for some women.

Through education and awareness, the organization seeks to dispel myths surrounding IUDs, particularly the belief that they are unsuitable for younger women.

This focus on informed choice is aimed at empowering women to select contraceptive methods that best align with their individual health needs and life circumstances.

The initiative marks a significant step towards improving reproductive health resources in Ghent, facilitating access to an effective contraceptive method and enhancing women's autonomy over their reproductive choices.
