EP President Calls for Strategic Action: '2025 is the Time to Step Up'

Metsola urges EU leaders to reinforce Europe's global standing and accelerate enlargement in face of geopolitical challenges.
Addressing the European Council and the EU-Western Balkans Summit, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola delivered a poignant message to EU leaders, underscoring the imperative for Europe to assert its role on the world stage and prioritize enlargement.

Her remarks spanned critical geopolitical issues and internal EU cohesion, emphasizing the Union's strategic necessity to bolster its influence globally.

Speaking at the European Council, Metsola highlighted the need for decisive action to secure Europe’s global position, particularly in support of Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

'In 2024, we stood up.

And we can be proud of that.

But in 2025, we need to step-up if we are truly serious about asserting Europe’s place on the world stage,' Metsola stated.

She advocated for a comprehensive approach to peace in Ukraine, supporting President Zelenskyy’s Peace Plan and underlining the importance of maintaining sanctions against Russia to ensure Ukrainian sovereignty and security.

Metsola also addressed the persistent security issues arising from Russian interference in neighboring regions such as Moldova and Georgia, and in the Western Balkans.

Asserting that such interference necessitates a stronger approach towards EU enlargement, she emphasized the strategic importance of incorporating these regions into European structures.

Metsola's speech at the EU-Western Balkans Summit reiterated this point, urging faster progress on the enlargement front, which she called the EU's 'most powerful geopolitical tool'.

Her calls for accelerated enlargement come as the EU faces a shifting geopolitical landscape, with illegal interference from Russia increasing strategic pressures on potential member states like Ukraine and Moldova.

Metsola pointed out the necessity for decisive political will and reforms to facilitate this enlargement process, highlighting the role of EU institutions in adapting to a broader Union.

Moreover, the EP President praised the historic decision to integrate Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen Area, marking it as a testament to the benefits of enlargement and reinforcing EU unity.

Metsola's remarks also touched upon other regions, expressing concern for a democratic future in Belarus, the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, and the ongoing plight in Syria.

Metsola called for sustained diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in these regions, emphasizing dialogue and respect for fundamental rights and international law as guiding principles.

She also highlighted the European Parliament's support for Latin American leaders, exemplifying the Parliament's commitment to global democratic values.

The President's dual appearances at the European Council and the EU-Western Balkans Summit encapsulate her vision of a Europe that is not only responsive to immediate crises but also proactive in shaping a positive future through strategic enlargement and deliberate international engagement.

Her clarion call for Europe to 'step up' sets the stage for what could be a pivotal year in European politics.
