Ypres Bellewaerde Park's Amazonia Ride Set to Reopen After Technical Challenges

The €14 million water ride, plagued by operational issues, is scheduled to welcome visitors again on April 5, 2025.
Ypres Bellewaerde Park has confirmed that its €14 million Amazonia water ride, designed by Intamin, will reopen on April 5, 2025. The ride faced significant technical difficulties shortly after its initial opening in April 2024, leading to its closure twice during that year.

According to park spokesman Filip Van Dope, the closure period allowed the team to identify and rectify the problems that had previously plagued the ride.

Amazonia, which combines roller coaster elements with a water ride experience, experienced operational disruptions whereby boats deviated from their intended course and occasionally became stuck.

After the first closure, which lasted a month to address the issues, attempts to fix the ride's problems remained ongoing throughout the summer.

Although some repairs were made, the ride was deemed unfit for operation, leading to a second extended closure in August 2024.

In preparation for its reopening, Ypres Bellewaerde Park has implemented several modifications, including enhancements to the drive system in the ride's halfpipe section.

Officials have expressed optimism that these changes will ensure improved stability and functionality, stating that the pumps have also been upgraded for better water flow.

Despite the park's efforts and their hopeful outlook, concerns linger regarding the long-term reliability of the ride.

The director of the park, Stefan Lemey, previously highlighted Amazonia as a pioneering attraction, expecting it to earn accolades on both European and international stages.

However, the recurring technical challenges have led some stakeholders to question whether the ride will achieve its intended operational success.

Following extensive collaboration with Intamin to troubleshoot the ride's issues, officials are now awaiting the forthcoming reopening to demonstrate the effectiveness of the implemented solutions.
