UK-EU Relations: Minister Highlights Shared Goals for Economic Prosperity and Security

UK Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds emphasizes the necessity of cooperation between the UK and the EU at the EU/UK Forum Annual Conference in Brussels.
Nick Thomas-Symonds, the UK Minister for the Constitution and European Union Relations, addressed the EU/UK Forum Annual Conference in Brussels, highlighting the mutual goals of enhancing the relationship between the UK and the European Union (EU).

Thomas-Symonds stated that the UK and the EU face a range of aligned interests and challenges amid significant global change.

He articulated a desire for increased prosperity, strengthened security, and the safety of citizens in both regions.

In his speech, he referenced the UK Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, both of whom have outlined the economic challenges and the need for strategic growth initiatives.

Thomas-Symonds noted that President von der Leyen had introduced the 'Competitiveness Compass', aimed at addressing Europe's economic weaknesses while enhancing its competitiveness in the global market.

The Minister highlighted the importance of research, innovation, and productivity as key components of both the European agenda and the UK Prime Minister's Plan for Change.

He remarked that in 2023, trade between the UK and the EU exceeded £800 billion, underscoring the significance of their economic relationship.

Thomas-Symonds further emphasized the role of collaboration in education, science, and research as pivotal for driving innovation and job creation.

In addressing trade, he noted a significant decline in exports between the UK and EU from 2021 to 2023, with EU exports to the UK down by 32% and UK exports to the EU down by 27%, which he described as detrimental to both economies.

He called for reducing trade barriers to enhance mutual benefits, acknowledging the necessity of re-engaging with the Horizon Europe research program after the UK initially opted out.

Discussing security cooperation, Thomas-Symonds affirmed that recent meetings, including one between UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and EU leaders, have illustrated the shared interests in confronting common threats, including organized crime and terrorism.

He outlined the UK Government’s commitment to implement the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and the Windsor Framework while seeking to develop closer ties with the EU on security and defense matters.

On safety, he pointed out the need for coordinated law enforcement efforts to combat human trafficking and illegal immigration.

The Minister underscored the shared challenges both regions face and the necessity of collaborative strategies to enhance security.

Furthermore, he addressed economic cooperation, identifying areas for negotiation such as a Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement to mitigate trade barriers, as well as addressing the mutual recognition of professional qualifications.

He expressed a vision of a clean energy transition as part of the broader objective of sustainable growth, particularly in the context of energy security following the geopolitical shifts instigated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Thomas-Symonds concluded by advocating for a shift from ideologically-driven divisions to pragmatic negotiations, calling on UK and EU leaders to seize the opportunity for a strengthened partnership.

He referenced nearly 70 direct engagements between UK Ministers and their EU counterparts since the present government took office, which signal a commitment to building a cooperative future.

The upcoming leader-level summit in May is anticipated to further these discussions, aiming to consolidate progress on shared priorities in security, safety, and economic prosperity.
