UK-EU Relations: Minister Highlights Shared Goals for Economic Prosperity and Security

He outlined the UK Government’s commitment to implement the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and the Windsor Framework while seeking to develop closer ties with the EU on security and defense matters.

On safety, he pointed out the need for coordinated law enforcement efforts to combat human trafficking and illegal immigration.

The Minister underscored the shared challenges both regions face and the necessity of collaborative strategies to enhance security.

Furthermore, he addressed economic cooperation, identifying areas for negotiation such as a Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement to mitigate trade barriers, as well as addressing the mutual recognition of professional qualifications.

He expressed a vision of a clean energy transition as part of the broader objective of sustainable growth, particularly in the context of energy security following the geopolitical shifts instigated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Thomas-Symonds concluded by advocating for a shift from ideologically-driven divisions to pragmatic negotiations, calling on UK and EU leaders to seize the opportunity for a strengthened partnership.

He referenced nearly 70 direct engagements between UK Ministers and their EU counterparts since the present government took office, which signal a commitment to building a cooperative future.

The upcoming leader-level summit in May is anticipated to further these discussions, aiming to consolidate progress on shared priorities in security, safety, and economic prosperity.
