President Trump's latest initiative seeks to pinpoint major financial inefficiencies within federal agencies, led by Elon Musk.
In a recent interview with Fox News, former President
Donald Trump revealed that he has tasked
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and
Tesla, with the mission of uncovering "hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud" within U.S. federal agencies.
Trump reiterated his dedication to tackling waste and fraud, expressing that his views align with what he believes is a public demand for governmental reform.
"We're going to discover billions, even hundreds of billions of dollars in fraud and abuse. The people elected me on that," Trump remarked.
Musk will be at the helm of the Department of Government Efficiency, aiming to streamline operations and pinpoint inefficiencies across various government departments.
His initial task is to conduct an audit of the Pentagon, which has an annual budget approaching $1 trillion.
This budget was recently increased when former President
Joe Biden sanctioned a defense spending bill totaling $895 billion for the fiscal year ending September 30.
Musk's appointment has sparked controversy, especially among critics who question the legality of his position and the potential dangers of revealing classified information.
Despite these concerns, Trump confirmed his goal to downsize the federal workforce, with Musk's staff seeking access to sensitive data within different governmental computer systems.
National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has specifically highlighted the U.S. Navy’s shipbuilding programs as a key area for reform, labeling the current condition of these operations as "an absolute mess" and signaling the need for substantial enhancements to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Following Trump's directives, Musk has initiated the closure of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), leading to thousands of layoffs.
Subsequently, he is expected to focus on the Department of Education, where similar actions are likely to occur.
Trump noted, "Then I'm going to go to the military."
Musk has considerable contracts with the federal government, as pointed out by House Democrat Mark Pocan.
However, Trump emphasized that Musk would not profit financially from his association with the Department of Government Efficiency.
