US President claims Russia and Ukraine will commence ceasefire negotiations after a two-hour discussion with his Russian counterpart.
US President
Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to "immediately" begin ceasefire negotiations following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin that lasted more than two hours.
In statements made via his Truth Social network, Trump emphasized the positive tone of the conversation, asserting that it had gone "very well" and expressing optimism about the potential for an end to the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for three years.
Following the call, Putin indicated his willingness to collaborate with Ukraine to draft a memorandum aimed at establishing a future peace agreement.
However, he did not confirm the unconditional 30-day ceasefire that Trump had sought.
According to Putin, the dialogue was "very informative and very open" and described it as "very useful" in fostering discussions about peace.
As part of his outreach, Trump communicated with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky prior to his conversation with Putin.
After the call, Trump reported that he had updated Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and Finland about the resumption of peace talks.
In addition, Trump noted that the Vatican, following the recent election of Pope Leo XIV as the first American pontiff, expressed significant interest in hosting the upcoming talks between Russia and Ukraine.
This development comes amid increasing frustration from various parties regarding the prolonged conflict, with Trump having previously committed to resolving the situation quickly during his election campaign.
