U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin prepare for discussions aimed at addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine, amidst increasing diplomatic efforts.
On Monday, a scheduled telephone conversation between U.S. President
Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir V. Putin is set to take place, focusing on the war in Ukraine as diplomatic efforts intensify to bring an end to the nearly three-year conflict.
The call is expected to occur at 10 a.m. Eastern Time and marks the second publicly acknowledged conversation between the two leaders since Trump began his second term.
Following the call with Putin, President Trump plans to engage in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies to further address the situation in Ukraine.
The first call, which took place in February 2025, was characterized by Russian officials as indicative of a waning Western commitment to isolate and sanction Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Trump remarked on the potential for the call, expressing hope that “a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have never happened, will end.”
Dmitri S. Peskov, spokesman for President Putin, confirmed the call's schedule and expressed gratitude for the U.S. diplomatic engagement, stating, “If the political services of the U.S. — which we highly value and are grateful to the American side — if they actually help us reach our goals with peaceful means, that would indeed be preferable.”
The first recognized phone conversation between the two leaders since Trump's re-election was significant due to its timing amid growing diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which commenced with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Key topics are anticipated to include a potential ceasefire and prospects for a negotiated resolution to the war, with both Trump and Putin indicating that direct communication could serve as a pivotal step toward achieving peace.
