Poland's Presidential Run-off Set for Tight Race Amid High Voter Turnout

Poland's Presidential Run-off Set for Tight Race Amid High Voter Turnout

Exit polls indicate a competitive showdown between liberal candidate Rafał Trzaskowski and conservative contender Karol Nawrocki.
WARSAW – Poland's presidential race reached a critical juncture on Sunday evening, with exit polls confirming a highly competitive run-off election.

According to an Ipsos exit poll conducted at 21:00 CEST, the second round of voting between liberal candidate Rafał Trzaskowski, the Mayor of Warsaw, and right-wing populist Karol Nawrocki remains too close to call, with projections of 50.3% for Trzaskowski and 49.7% for Nawrocki.

By 23:30 CET, partial results from 50% of polling stations indicated a late shift, placing Nawrocki in the lead with 50.7% compared to Trzaskowski's 49.3%.

Official results from the National Electoral Commission are anticipated early Monday morning.

Voter turnout was notably high, estimated at 72.8%, marking a record participation rate.

Post-exit poll remarks saw Trzaskowski declaring victory with claims of having ‘won,’ while Nawrocki expressed confidence in his supporters, asserting that they would triumph and ‘save Poland.’

The election saw over 700,000 Poles registered to vote abroad, with more than 200,000 registering specifically for this run-off, reflecting a significant engagement from the diaspora, which traditionally exhibits more conservative voting patterns.

This electoral contest, one of the closest in Poland's post-communist history, caps off a deeply polarizing campaign during which both candidates sought to mobilize younger, far-right-leaning voters.

A victory for Trzaskowski, representing the ruling centrist Civic Coalition (KO) and backed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, may lead to a reduction in the political stalemate that has affected Poland since his party gained parliamentary control last year.

Should he win, he may ally with Tusk to advance delayed judicial reforms, enhance media independence, and potentially liberalize abortion laws and LGBTQ+ rights.

Conversely, a win for Nawrocki, who is a historian and former boxer, would secure the presidency for conservative forces until at least 2030, reinforcing the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party's influence despite their recent parliamentary losses.

Nawrocki has campaigned on a platform emphasizing law-and-order and a defense of 'traditional Polish values,' maintaining support from conservative factions, including some from the United States.

The far-right Confederation party, led by Sławomir Mentzen, did not progress to the second round; however, its presence in the first round reflected broader political shifts in Poland.

The 2023 election cycle showcased significant challenges to Poland's political landscape and tested the nation’s trajectory in relation to EU dynamics.
