Poland Accuses Russia of Plotting Terrorist Acts Against Planes

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk alleges that Russia orchestrated attacks on airlines, but provides limited information.
During a press briefing in Warsaw on Wednesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Russia of orchestrating 'acts of terror' against aircraft both in Poland and internationally.

Tusk, speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, did not delve into the threat's specifics but affirmed the credibility of the concerns.

"Russia was planning acts of terrorism in the air," Tusk stated, noting that these actions targeted international airlines, not just Poland.

His disclosure contributes to escalating worries about Russian hybrid warfare tactics, which have recently targeted European nations.

These tactics are considered part of a wider destabilization campaign, encompassing espionage, cyberattacks, and sabotage.

The December downing of a passenger plane in Kazakhstan, attributed to Russia, echoed the 2014 Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 incident in Ukraine—for which Russia has consistently denied guilt.

Besides aviation assaults, there has been a noticeable increase in sabotage incidents involving undersea cables in the Baltic Sea, with Russia and China suspected of participation.

European intelligence agencies have issued increasingly alarming warnings regarding Russian activities across the continent, with countries like the UK, Poland, and the Baltic states prosecuting individuals for espionage or connections to Russian intelligence.

In response, the European Union imposed sanctions on Russian military intelligence agents in December, marking its first action of this nature.

EU foreign ministers have committed to expanding the sanctioned individuals list as more offenders are identified.

Russia’s increasing use of hybrid warfare tactics is a significant concern for European security.
