MEPs Endorse Syrian-Led Political Transition Amid Ongoing Conflict

The European Parliament calls for EU support in rebuilding war-torn Syria through a locally driven peace process.
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have expressed their support for a Syrian-led political transition aimed at fostering unity and rebuilding efforts in Syria.

In a resolution passed in Strasbourg, MEPs articulated a sense of urgency for the European Union (EU) to engage in this 'historic opportunity.' They acknowledged the need for stability in Syria and across the Middle East, which has been marred by over a decade of conflict.

The resolution recognized the 'bravery, dignity, and resilience' of the Syrian people amidst their ongoing struggles.

The parliament's draft resolution called upon the EU and its member states to collaborate with Syrian authorities in their reconstruction efforts.

MEP Hannah Neumann from the Greens/EFA, who is also a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, emphasized the gravity of the humanitarian crisis, highlighting that fourteen years of war have inflicted unimaginable suffering on the Syrian population.

Neumann remarked on the fragile nature of the current political situation following the recent fall of the Assad regime, stating that a cautious hope for change has emerged but remains tenuous.

She condemned the violent confrontations between Syrian security forces and remnants of the former Assad government, urging the de facto authorities to conduct prompt and transparent investigations into these incidents, reiterating that those responsible should be held accountable under international law.

Additionally, she urged the EU to adopt a decisive approach toward supporting Syria, stressing the importance of avoiding naivety in their actions.

Neumann called for the suspension of sectoral sanctions that disproportionately affect civilians, arguing that such measures hinder economic recovery essential for achieving stability.

She underscored the necessity for reconstruction efforts to align with the actual needs of the Syrian populace.

Neumann further conveyed the importance of ensuring that the future governance of Syria be driven by its own people, warning against the emergence of new dictatorial powers or the fragmentation of the nation by warlords.

She pointed out that accountability for past atrocities is necessary for healing and that Europe could serve as a partner in this transition without imposing directives.

The MEP highlighted concerns regarding the current safety conditions in Syria, stating that the suspension of asylum applications by certain EU member states is unacceptable.

She insisted that any returns of displaced persons be conducted voluntarily and safely, adhering strictly to international law and UNHCR principles.

The call for fair asylum procedures reinforces the EU's obligation to protect Syrians displaced by ongoing conflicts.
