MECHELEN – The city of Mechelen is employing advanced 3D scanning technology to assess its cycling infrastructure, focusing on the maintenance and safety of approximately 50 kilometers of bike paths.

This initiative aims to enhance the quality of cycling environments as part of broader European efforts to promote cycling and urban mobility.

Under the leadership of Alexander Vandersmissen, the city’s mobility director, this project will involve the deployment of a specialized car equipped with 3D scanning technology.

This vehicle is designed to traverse local cycle paths, capturing detailed imagery that will create high-resolution 3D maps of the surfaces.

The 3D scanning process aims to provide the city with a comprehensive overview of the current condition of the bike paths, enabling officials to identify and address any potential issues, such as cracks, subsidence, or uneven surfaces.

These proactive measures are intended to prevent minor defects from escalating into major safety hazards.

Mechelen's initiative is supported by a larger European project focused on improving cycling conditions across urban environments.

As cycling remains a popular mode of transport in Mechelen, officials are committed to leveraging innovative solutions that enhance the safety and comfort of cyclists.

The specialized scanning car, developed in Belgium, is outfitted with cameras and sensors specifically tailored to monitor the distinct challenges of cycling pathways.

Filip Geuens, representing XenomatiX, the technology provider, outlined the utility of this project: “We will not only see defects but also elements that contribute to cycling discomfort, such as unevenness.” The adaptation of existing road inspection technology for bicycle path assessment further emphasizes a movement toward improving urban cycling conditions.

The innovative vehicle is designed to navigate the specific terrain of cycling paths while maintaining stability for accurate data collection.

With features including four wheels and a pedal-based propulsion system, the car ensures smooth operation, enabling thorough assessments of the cycling routes.
