Le Pen and Orbán Critique EU at Far-Right Rally in France

Marine Le Pen and Viktor Orbán lead a gathering of far-right leaders in France, voicing strong opposition to the European Union amidst rising sentiments within nationalist movements.
Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's far-right National Rally (RN), and Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, delivered sharp criticisms of the European Union during a rally held in Mormant-sur-Vernisson, south of Paris.

This event marked one year since the National Rally's significant victories in the European Parliament elections, where the party achieved its highest vote share to date.

The rally, attended by thousands of supporters and various far-right leaders from across Europe, aimed to showcase the purported unity and strength of the anti-immigration political faction.

Orbán, self-identified as the 'black sheep of the EU', denounced the EU's migration policies, stating they amounted to 'an organized exchange of populations to replace the cultural base' of Europe.

He took pride in his government's efforts to 'push back migrants,' asserting a commitment to safeguard societal security, despite facing sanctions from Brussels.

Le Pen characterized the EU as a 'graveyard of politically unfulfilled promises,' criticizing its 'woke and ultra-liberal' stance.

She expressed a desire to reform the EU from within, stating, 'We want to finish the game and win, to take power in France and in Europe and give it back to the people.' Previously, her party supported the notion of a French exit from the EU, but the current approach seeks to position the party as a viable alternative within the political framework.

Key attendees included Matteo Salvini, Italy's Deputy Prime Minister, and leaders from Spain’s Vox party and the Czech Republic.

The meeting was part of a broader coalition known as Patriots for Europe, one of multiple far-right factions within the European Parliament.

Salvini described migration as a 'threat' to youth in Europe, alleging that illegal immigration, predominantly driven by Islamists, is financially and logistically supported in silence by Brussels.

The rally faced substantial opposition, with approximately 4,000 demonstrators from leftist groups and trade unions gathering nearby in Montargis.

They expressed their dissent against the far-right gathering, branding the participating leaders as representatives of racism and xenophobia.

As the political landscape evolves ahead of the crucial 2027 presidential elections in France, speculation surrounds Le Pen's potential candidacy following her conviction earlier this year in a case related to fake jobs that currently disallows her from holding public office.

Should Le Pen be unable to run, her designated successor, Jordan Bardella, who leads the RN, has indicated he would step in as a candidate.

Bardella, polling favorably in possible matchups for the presidential election, emphasized a rejection of the current EU leadership, saying, 'We reject the Europe of Ursula von der Leyen,' while asserting a vision for a renewed Europe.

Orbán further encouraged the RN, emphasizing the necessity of their success for a shared vision among nationalist parties in Brussels, stating, 'Without you, we will not be able to occupy Brussels.' This rally symbolizes a growing wave of far-right sentiment across Europe, as leaders increasingly align their platforms against established EU policies, particularly regarding immigration and national sovereignty.
