Meloni emphasizes the importance of NATO and proposes a non-retaliatory approach to tariffs while addressing European defense funding.
In a speech to the Italian Parliament, Premier Giorgia Meloni articulated her stance on the necessity of maintaining strong ties between Europe and the United States, particularly leading up to the European Council scheduled for March 20 and 21. She characterized any movement towards a divide between the Atlantic partners as 'naive' and 'foolish,' underscoring the pivotal role of NATO in safeguarding the security of Europe over the past 75 years.
This solidarity has been particularly vital during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, she noted.
Meloni conveyed her intention to advocate against retaliatory tariffs, which were imposed by the previous U.S. administration under
Donald Trump.
The Premier stated, 'I don’t think that would be a good deal,' arguing that Italy's focus should be on finding 'common-sense solutions' that respect economic relations between the U.S. and Europe rather than succumbing to the instinct for reprisals—emphasizing that such a cycle would ultimately harm all parties involved.
The discussion also touched upon the European Union's ambitious €800 billion rearmament plan, led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Meloni expressed firm opposition to reallocating funds from existing budgets, reaffirming Italy's stance that cohesion funds should not be diverted, a point she described as a 'battle' her government successfully fought.
She reiterated, 'Italy does not intend to divert a single euro from cohesion resources,' hoping for collective agreement among member states on this issue.
In the context of Italy's public finances, Meloni pointed to favorable economic indicators and the country's relatively low bond spreads, which currently stand approximately one hundred basis points lower than the figures recorded when she assumed office.
This stability, she indicated, would allow Italy to explore additional deficits beyond the obligations set by the Stability Pact.
She stated that the government is examining the possibilities offered by the rearmament plan, maintaining a responsible fiscal approach.
Furthermore, Meloni highlighted that enhancing defense capabilities extends beyond acquiring weaponry.
She asserted a comprehensive view of security that includes strengthening border defenses, combating terrorism, enhancing cybersecurity, and protecting critical infrastructure such as underwater domains, pipelines, trade routes, and food supply chains.
She emphasized that achieving security involves a broad strategy, as 'without defense, there is no security, and without security, there is no freedom,' mentioning the necessity of safeguarding Italy and its citizens.
As the international landscape continues to evolve, Meloni expressed confidence in Italy's ability to navigate these challenges by adhering to national interests and exercising prudent leadership.
'With a clear vision, a little courage, focusing only on the really important things, Italy has all the cards to get through even this storm,' she concluded.
