Israeli Airstrikes on Gaza Resumed, Resulting in Casualties

Fresh military actions in the Gaza Strip have led to the deaths of five Palestinians amid renewed hostilities.
Israeli airstrikes resumed over the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of at least five Palestinians, according to health officials in the enclave.

The Israeli military reported targeting a Hamas military location in northern Gaza, citing preparations for firing into Israeli settlements as the reason for the renewed assaults.

This escalation comes after nearly two months of relative calm marked by a ceasefire agreement.

Health officials in Gaza stated that three individuals died due to an airstrike that hit a residence in the Sabra suburb of Gaza City, while an additional strike in the northern town of Beit Hanoun resulted in the deaths of two men and injuries to six others.

Reports indicate that the Israeli navy also targeted several boats that were allegedly associated with Hamas and the Islamic Jihad militant groups, asserting that these vessels were intended for “terrorist” operations.

Eyewitnesses reported an Israeli drone attack on fishing boats off the coast of Gaza City, with several boats set ablaze.

As part of the renewed military operations, the Israeli military distributed evacuation leaflets in areas of Beit Hanoun and Khan Younis, urging residents to leave their homes due to the declaration of these locales as “dangerous combat zones.” One leaflet stated, "Staying in the shelters or the current tent puts your lives and that of your family members in danger; evacuate immediately."

Earlier reports from Palestinian health authorities noted that airstrikes during a single day on Tuesday led to over 400 casualties.

The Israeli government characterized the assault as “just the beginning” of military actions against Gaza.

Tensions have escalated as both Israel and Hamas exchanged accusations over the failure to uphold the ceasefire, which had provided a degree of respite for the approximately 2.3 million residents of Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the military actions were a response to Hamas rejecting proposals for extending the ceasefire.

Hamas officials have claimed that they are prepared to finalize a three-phase ceasefire agreement as previously negotiated, despite accusing Israel of undermining mediation efforts aimed at establishing a lasting peace.

As of the latest reports, Hamas retains custody of 59 hostages out of nearly 250 taken during earlier conflicts.
