Hasselt House Fire Claims One Life as Investigation Underway

Firefighters respond to blaze on Normandiëstraat, rescue occupant who later dies; cause still being determined.
A house fire occurred on Normandiëstraat in Hasselt on the morning of August 12, resulting in one fatality.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at approximately 6:56 AM. The Southwest Limburg Emergency Services dispatched multiple firefighting units to the scene, which is situated near the local railway station.

Upon arrival, firefighters were able to rescue one occupant from the burning building.

Despite their efforts, the individual later succumbed to injuries sustained during the fire.

The Limburg public prosecutor’s office has confirmed the fatality.

Currently, a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Fire experts, alongside a medical examiner, are examining the scene where the fire had reportedly been smoldering for some time prior to the firefighters' arrival.

Evidence suggests that the fire had caused considerable damage, including the complete burning of a lounger within the premises.

During the emergency response, Normandiëstraat was closed to allow firefighters and investigators to safely conduct their operations.

The authorities have yet to determine the origins of the fire, and further assessments regarding damage to neighboring properties are pending.

In an unrelated but notable event, Belgium has recently been dealing with a series of suspicious incidents involving letters containing unidentified white powder.

The most recent case occurred on December 9, 2024, when an envelope was received at the Interior Ministry in Brussels, marking the fourth such incident in recent weeks.

A spokesperson from the fire brigade confirmed that three individuals were isolated, although they did not exhibit any symptoms.

Previous incidents involved similar letters sent to various government offices, including State Security and the Prime Minister’s Office.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertain any connections between these occurrences.
