Friedrich Merz Elected as German Chancellor After Unprecedented Vote Process

In a remarkable political turnaround, Friedrich Merz secures chancellorship following a contested first vote and support from opposition parties.
BERLIN – Friedrich Merz has officially been elected as the Chancellor of Germany after a highly unusual election process in the Bundestag on Tuesday.

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) faced a significant setback in the morning, failing to secure a majority during the initial voting round, where he received 310 votes in favor against 307 opposition votes, with three members abstaining.

A majority of 316 was required to secure his appointment in the first attempt.

The coalition supporting Merz, which comprises the CDU, its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democrats (SPD), commands a total of 328 seats in the Bundestag, surpassing the necessary absolute majority by 12 votes.

However, this coalition had not secured enough votes to elect Merz initially.

Following the unexpected results of the first vote, coalition leaders held emergency discussions that led to a decision to conduct a second voting round on the same day.

This permitted vote was achieved with the backing of two left-wing opposition parties, making it possible to alter the parliament's procedural rules temporarily.

In the second vote, Merz garnered 325 votes, successfully assuming the role of Chancellor, while 289 members voted against him and one abstained.

His victory marks a historic moment as he becomes the first individual designated as Chancellor in the modern German republic to face such a dual-vote scenario.

His predecessor, Olaf Scholz of the SPD, who officially concluded his tenure on the eve of Merz's election, participated in a ceremonial 'curfew' marking the transition of power from his administration to Merz's newly formed cabinet.

This cabinet is anticipated to be inaugurated later in the day.

Merz leads a government that is already addressing various significant issues, including sluggish economic growth and heightened defense needs in response to evolving global security challenges.

Germany has experienced a recession over the past two years, prompting the Merz administration to prioritize military investments and infrastructure improvements.

Earlier, the coalition passed a key reform modifying Germany's stringent debt rules, enabling further governmental spending aimed at addressing these critical sectors.

Shortly after taking office, Merz is scheduled to embark on an inaugural diplomatic mission to France, followed by a visit to Poland, contingent upon the confirmation of his position after the tumultuous events of Tuesday.
