Flemish Fire Brigades to Enhance Wild Animal Rescue Training by 2026

East Flanders' PAULO training centre partners with UK-based BARTA to equip firefighters with skills for rescuing reptiles and wildlife.
WACHTEBEKE, EAST FLANDERS – Starting January 2026, the PAULO training centre in Wachtebeke will expand its programs to include the rescue of reptiles and wild animals for Flemish fire brigades.

This initiative is a result of a collaboration with BARTA, a UK-based organization that specializes in training for animal rescue, and has been facilitated by Deputy David Coppens from the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA).

PAULO is already renowned in Flanders for its specialized training in animal rescue, particularly for large animals such as cows and horses.

Firefighters across the region participate in PAULO’s courses, which focus on safely managing animals that may be trapped, injured, or pose a danger to public safety.

The decision to broaden the training curriculum comes in response to a request from PAULO's instructors, who aim to enhance the skills of emergency responders in animal welfare situations.

The partnership with BARTA is set to introduce international best practices, new equipment, and varied rescue scenarios to the training programs.

According to Deputy Coppens, the intention is to refine the training framework throughout Belgium, making the rescue efforts more secure and compassionate for both animals and the personnel involved in such operations.

Coppens emphasized the evolving public perception of animal welfare, indicating that the increased occurrence of animal emergencies necessitates a more humane and compliant approach to their rescue.

The updated training will incorporate aspects of animal behaviour, trauma care, and practical rescue techniques.

The comprehensive upgrade to the training program will take place at Puyenbroeck in Wachtebeke, where firefighters will practice with both simulated and actual animal rescue situations.

The East Flanders government is providing financial support for this initiative, which aims to enhance the capabilities of firefighters involved in animal rescue operations across Flanders.
