Fire Brigade Controls 50-Meter Roadside Blaze in Waanrode

Authorities emphasize fire safety measures amid ongoing drought conditions
A 50-meter roadside fire in Waanrode, located near Kortenaken, has been successfully extinguished by local firefighters.

The incident, attributed to ongoing dry weather conditions, prompted officials to remind the public about the importance of proper waste disposal, particularly concerning cigarette butts, which are often a source of ignition.

Jeroen Ameel, representative of the Flemish Brabant East Emergency Service Zone, indicated that the fire resulted in significant smoke development and could have escalated if not promptly addressed.

Once the fire was reported, firefighters were able to suppress the flames quickly, preventing further damage.

This incident involved more than fifty meters of burned vegetation alongside the road.

In response, local authorities have reiterated the need for public vigilance regarding fire-related activities, particularly during periods of drought.

Ameel stressed, "It is never allowed to throw cigarette butts on the ground, but now with this persistent dry weather, it is certainly not allowed.

If you are having a barbecue, be careful and have sand and water ready.

Do not make an open fire, not even in your own garden, and certainly not in a nature reserve."

To mitigate the risk of future roadside fires in the Kortenaken area, ongoing measures include regularly mowing and clearing roadside vegetation, which reduces the presence of combustible materials.

Keeping grass trimmed to approximately 10 cm during high-risk fire seasons and removing dry underbrush are effective strategies in reducing fire hazards.

Additionally, establishing fuel-free buffer zones along roadsides can prevent ignition sources from coming into contact with flammable vegetation.

These zones, which may consist of cleared pull-over lanes and verges devoid of combustible materials, are particularly critical in areas near picnic spots and rest areas where carelessly discarded cigarettes or car sparks can ignite fires.

Awareness campaigns have also been launched targeting local residents and drivers, focusing on fire risks during dry spells.

These initiatives encourage responsible behavior such as refraining from using open flames and promptly reporting any observed fires.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of community cooperation in fire prevention efforts.
