European Parliament President Roberta Metsola Visits Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank

Metsola highlights Europe's humanitarian efforts as the first European leader to enter Gaza in over a decade.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola is on an official visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories on January 18 and 19, 2024. This marks her as the first European leader to enter Gaza in more than a decade.

The visit underscores the European Union’s commitment to facilitating humanitarian aid in the region amidst ongoing tensions.

During her visit, President Metsola engaged in discussions with key Israeli officials, including Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, focusing on stabilizing the situation and reinforcing the current ceasefire.

In a statement, she expressed, "At this critical moment for the region and the world, I wanted to come here to underline and witness first-hand Europe’s critical role in getting humanitarian aid into Gaza."

President Metsola's agenda included visiting humanitarian operations at the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing Point before she entered Gaza to observe the flow of humanitarian assistance from Israel.

After her return to Israel, she received updates from the European Union Border Assistance Mission for Rafah (EUBAM Rafah) regarding their ongoing efforts.

Later in the day, she visited the site of the Nova Festival in Re’im and was scheduled to hold talks with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

On January 19, Metsola plans to meet with Palestinian leadership in Ramallah, including Hussein al-Sheikh, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and 2024 Sakharov Prize Nominee Reem Al Hajajra, Director of Women of the Sun.

The visit follows increased diplomatic efforts by Metsola to foster stability and peace in the Middle East.

She has been actively engaging with leaders from Israel, Palestine, and various Arab nations, as well as representatives from the United States, to promote a ceasefire and enhance humanitarian efforts.

Her advocacy is also reflected in a resolution passed by the European Parliament on January 18, 2024, which calls for the immediate release of hostages, the dismantling of Hamas, and the rejuvenation of the two-state solution framework.

The pressing humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to attract international attention, with President Metsola's visit highlighting Europe’s role in supporting humanitarian aid efforts.

The European Parliament has reiterated its commitment to fostering security for Israel while advocating for the rights and perspectives of the Palestinian people.
