European Parliament Leaders Visit Copenhagen to Prepare for Danish EU Presidency

Preparations for Denmark's upcoming Presidency highlight the need for a secure and competitive Europe amid ongoing challenges.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and political group leaders visited Copenhagen to discuss priorities as Denmark prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from July 1 to December 31, 2025. The Conference of Presidents met with Danish government officials to emphasize the importance of a safe and competitive Europe during precarious times.

During the visit, Metsola praised Denmark’s capability in forging consensus and addressing key issues, remarking on the necessity for Europe to take responsibility for its own security, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

"The time for geopolitical outsourcing is over.

We must take responsibility for our own security, and that starts with Ukraine, as Ukraine's security is Europe's security," Metsola stated.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen echoed these sentiments, stressing that focus should be directed toward tackling shared challenges including migration, high energy prices, and reinforcing support for Ukraine.

Frederiksen noted, "We have to make a strong and safe Europe," reflecting on discussions with the Conference of Presidents.

The meeting included an audience with Their Majesties King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark, symbolizing the ceremonial importance of the upcoming presidency.

Denmark has been recognized for its pragmatic approach in EU policymaking, and both Metsola and Frederiksen expressed confidence in Denmark’s leadership.

In parallel, a transport agreement aimed at enhancing the movement of goods between the EU and Ukraine was extended.

The EU-Ukraine road transport agreement, first established in June 2022, facilitates essential transport routes despite the ongoing disruption caused by the conflict.

The agreement’s prolongation was supported by a majority of the Transport and Tourism Committee, aimed at continuing aid to Ukraine and easing operational challenges for EU hauliers.

The updated agreement mandates that drivers carry authorization documents for international carriage and place identifiable stickers on their vehicles to indicate compliance.

Moreover, it incorporates a safeguard clause enabling suspension of the agreement under specific conditions affecting the transport market.

The updated provisions are set to be presented for a formal vote during the upcoming plenary session in June, aimed at ensuring the continuity of support to both Ukrainian exports and EU imports.

Denmark's presidency approach is expected to address vital issues such as security, sustainability, and competitiveness, crucial as the EU navigates global geopolitical tensions and economic pressures.
