European Parliament Implements Stricter Lobbying Regulations

European Parliament Implements Stricter Lobbying Regulations

New transparency rules mandate declarations for meetings between officials and lobbyists.
Brussels – The European Parliament is intensifying regulations governing access and interactions between its officials and lobbyists, marking a significant shift in transparency protocols.

Under the new framework introduced during the ongoing session in Strasbourg, accredited lobbyists are now required to provide justification for their visits to the Parliament.

This entails detailing the purpose of their visit and identifying the officials they wish to meet.

Furthermore, starting from September 1, 2023, comprehensive transparency rules will take effect, mandating high-ranking officials—including the secretary-general, directors-general, directors, heads of units, liaison heads, and team leaders—to disclose any meetings they hold with representatives of lobbying groups, as well as with officials from member states or third countries regarding files currently under discussion within the Parliament.

This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance accountability in the legislative process and to mitigate potential conflicts of interest amidst rising scrutiny over the influence of lobbyists in European decision-making.

The introduction of these measures reflects a broader commitment by EU institutions to fortify democratic integrity and public trust by ensuring that lobbying activities are conducted transparently and that policymakers are held accountable for their interactions with external stakeholders.
