The European Union's military crisis response force, known as the EU Rapid Deployment Capacity (EU RDC), is now officially operational following unanimous political support from all 27 member countries, as announced by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on Tuesday evening.

The EU RDC, which is comprised of approximately 5,000 troops, reached its full operational strength at the beginning of the year.

This milestone aligns with the EU’s strategic aims outlined in the 2022 military strategy known as the Strategy Compass, which was developed in the context of heightened security concerns following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the EU RDC's operational status, actual deployment remains contingent upon the unanimous agreement of the member states, a process often marked by lengthy negotiations.

Kallas highlighted the importance of the force, stating, "This will allow Europe to act faster when crises erupt," while noting that operational status does not automatically translate to immediate troop deployment.

The EU RDC is designed to complement existing national armed forces and NATO units.

Its primary capabilities include conducting rescue and evacuation operations in conflict zones, as well as providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

While there is speculation regarding the potential deployment of the crisis response force to Ukraine, particularly in the context of enforcing a ceasefire, the prospect remains contentious among member states.

Some EU countries have expressed strong opposition to sending military units into Ukraine, reflecting the complexities of international military engagement.

European military officials have generally indicated that the involvement of the EU RDC in Ukraine-related scenarios is unlikely, given the political sensitivities and divergent opinions within the EU regarding military intervention.
