EU Parliament Debates Framework for Migrant Returns

EU Parliament Debates Framework for Migrant Returns

MEPs discuss new proposal aimed at improving efficiency of deportations for rejected asylum seekers.
STRASBOURG - The European Parliament has convened to discuss a new legal framework intended to enhance the efficiency of returning rejected migrants to their countries of origin.

The proposal, initiated by the European Commission and presented by Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Ylva Johansson, has garnered attention amidst ongoing challenges related to migration within the European Union.

During a plenary session, Commissioner Johansson outlined that currently only one in five rejected migrants depart the EU following their asylum applications being denied.

Many opt instead to relocate to different member states as a means to evade deportation, complicating existing immigration controls.

Support for the framework was solid among several political groups, notably the European People's Party (EPP), which viewed it as a necessary step in addressing a long-standing issue within EU migration policies.

Similar endorsements came from the Patriots for Europe (PfE), the Conservatives and Reformists Group (CRG), and the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN).

Conversely, members of The Left group expressed significant concerns regarding the proposal.

They criticized the potential for sending migrants to third countries with which they have no connections, arguing that such actions would contradict the EU's commitment to human rights and its core values.

Portuguese MEP João Oliveira labeled the approach as inherently discriminatory, characterizing it as a move that could empower far-right ideologies.

Other MEPs echoed these sentiments, including Greek MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou from the PfE, who asserted that illegal crossings pose threats to European identity.

She suggested extreme measures, including detaining migrants on uninhabited islands prior to deportation.

Similarly, Slovak MEP Milan Mazurek called for a policy approach reminiscent of those enacted in the United States.

In response, Hilde Vautmans from the Renew Europe group cautioned against the stigmatization of migrants, emphasizing that many are fleeing from conflict and persecution.

Commissioner Johansson, emphasizing the need for a practical approach to EU immigration policies, stated that the current return rates are unacceptable and outlined objectives focused on restoring credibility to the legislation governing migration.

She also highlighted a triad of main goals: to reinforce the credibility of EU legislation, combat human smuggling, and enhance the security of EU citizens.

The Commission has committed to ensuring that human rights considerations remain integral to the legislative process, providing processes for information and appeals for rejected migrants.

Nonetheless, it noted that those deemed uncooperative or a security risk may face detention prior to deportation.

Furthermore, the Commissioner stressed the necessity of pursuing a dual approach by not only tightening return policies but also addressing the root causes of migration through diplomatic efforts, while also exploring new legal pathways for migrants.

As the debate continues, the EU faces mounting pressure to find viable solutions to manage migration effectively while upholding its foundational principles.
