António Costa recently engaged in a telephone conversation with Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to discuss enhancing regional cooperation and energy partnerships.
Costa expressed appreciation for the strategic cooperation established between the European Union (EU) and Kazakhstan, emphasizing the importance of Kazakhstan as a key partner for the EU.
In a post on the social media platform X, Costa highlighted their commitment to strengthening trade and connectivity links, stating, 'Kazakhstan is an important partner of the EU, and we will continue to strengthen trade and connectivity links.' He also commended Kazakhstan's adherence to a rules-based international order and the countries’ intended cooperation in areas such as multilateralism, territorial integrity, and conflict resolution.
President Tokayev indicated that relations between Kazakhstan and the EU have shown positive developments, particularly in the context of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.
He highlighted the significance of advancing collaboration in various sectors including trade, investment, energy, transportation, logistics, sustainable development, and digital transformation.
Looking ahead, both leaders expressed anticipation for the first-ever EU-Central Asia Summit, scheduled to take place in April 2025 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
The summit is poised to be a pivotal event for reinforcing relations between the EU and Central Asian nations.
Key topics for discussion will encompass connectivity, security challenges such as counter-terrorism, political cooperation in the region, climate change mitigation, and economic partnerships.
The summit represents a significant opportunity for the EU and Central Asian countries to align on mutual interests and explore avenues for cooperative development.
