The billionaire entrepreneur's forecast contrasts with current polling, which suggests the ruling PSOE party remains in the lead.
MADRID - In a recent message shared on his platform X, billionaire entrepreneur
Elon Musk predicted a forthcoming victory for the far-right Vox party in Spain's next elections.
However, recent public opinion polls indicate that Vox has not yet secured the support necessary for such an outcome.
Musk's message, which he posted on Saturday, asserts, "Vox will win the next election." The founder of
Tesla and SpaceX, who has been increasingly involved in political discussions, also leads the newly established US Department of Government Efficiency.
Spain's current coalition government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in alliance with the left-wing Sumar platform, relies on the parliamentary support of several regional parties, including the Catalan separatists JxCat and ERC, and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and EH-Bildu.
Their support is deemed crucial for the coalition's stability, particularly as threats from Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who operates from self-imposed exile in Belgium, loom over the government's operations.
Despite Puigdemont's repeated warnings that he may withdraw support, Sánchez has expressed confidence in his administration's ability to last until its scheduled term conclusion in 2027, resisting calls for early elections.
Recent polling data from the state-run CIS indicates that if elections were held today, Sánchez's PSOE would secure a victory, with the rival People's Party (EPP) and Vox following in the rankings.
Vox has experienced a gradual rise in popularity since the elections of 2023 but does not currently lead in polls.
In his remarks, Musk shared a retweet of a video featuring former US President
Donald Trump praising Vox leader Santiago Abascal for his work in Spain.
Abascal attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this year alongside various other far-right leaders, including Argentina's President Javier Milei.
During the CPAC gathering, Abascal acknowledged Musk, stating, "I have had the opportunity to thank @elonmusk for having returned freedom to this social network.
The end of woke censorship is a historic conquest of freedoms.” He also expressed his hope that Trump would refrain from imposing tariffs on Europe, asserting that the economic challenges faced by the continent are primarily due to the European Union's Green Pact and other regulations.
Musk has been significantly involved in the political landscape of Europe, facing criticism for his apparent support of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the lead-up to their elections.
He is also known to have personal ties with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Sánchez criticized what he termed as the influence of “technocrats” in global governance, alluding to figures like Musk and
Mark Zuckerberg without naming them directly.
