Demands for Recount Following Poland's Presidential Election

Rafał Trzaskowski's campaign calls for a recount amid allegations of voting irregularities in a closely contested race.
WARSAW – The campaign team of Rafał Trzaskowski is calling for a recount of the recent presidential runoff in Poland, citing irregularities in the voting process.

Trzaskowski, the candidate from the Civic Platform party led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, narrowly lost to the conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki, who is backed by the Law and Justice (PiS) party.

In the aftermath of the election earlier this month, reports of counting irregularities emerged from several districts, with claims that the issues may have impacted the results favorably for both candidates.

Nawrocki’s victory margin, while narrow, has prompted speculation about possible electoral discrepancies, though many observers believe the margin is significant enough that isolated issues would not alter the outcome.

In response, Trzaskowski's team filed an electoral complaint this week.

Cezary Tomczyk, the deputy leader of the Civic Platform and a member of Trzaskowski's election team, stated, "We’ve gone through the data from 31,627 polling stations across Poland.

Based on this analysis, I am filing a personal election protest, and I encourage you to do the same." He further advocated for voters to submit their own complaints and insisted that the call for a recount was not an attempt to undermine democracy but rather an effort to ensure its integrity.

Tomczyk particularly noted an increase in invalid ballots within districts that supported Trzaskowski in the first round of voting.

In contrast, representatives of the PiS party have dismissed the calls for a recount.

Adam Bielan, a Member of the European Parliament from PiS, stated in an interview, "I don't see the need for it, and I consider what some Civic Platform politicians are organising to be very dangerous." He contested the notion that the opposition, which currently holds a minority in both chambers of parliament, could manipulate results against the government candidate, labeling the suggestion as absurd.

The deadline for filing election complaints is set for Monday.

Post-deadline, the Supreme Court will be responsible for certifying the election results unless it decides to conduct a formal review or recount.

Karol Nawrocki is scheduled to be inaugurated on 6 August, succeeding Andrzej Duda, the incumbent president from PiS, who has completed two terms since 2015.
