ANTWERP – The city of Antwerp has officially commenced free open-air swimming sessions at Bonapartedok, located near the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS).

This initiative, overseen by Sportoase, runs every weekend until September 14, 2025, offering swimming opportunities from 12:00 to 19:30. An investment of approximately €200,000 has been allocated to develop this new recreational space, ensuring safety and enhancing the overall experience.

Having launched after the positive response from last year’s summer season, Antwerp's Bonapartedok seeks to provide residents with increased access to swimming facilities.

The designated swimming area features a custom jetty with designated lanes and a play area.

Each half-hour session accommodates up to 100 swimmers, with lifeguards present to ensure safety.

Advance bookings are required, but participation is free of charge.

The water quality at Bonapartedok is regularly monitored for cleanliness, and swimmers have noted the absence of chlorine, which enhances the natural swimming experience.

The initial swim of the season was kicked off by local sports leaders Stijn De Rooster and Annick De Ridder, who reported water temperatures around 18.5°C.

Feedback from early swimmers has been positive, with many expressing satisfaction with the water temperature and the overall atmosphere.

De Rooster, Antwerp's Alderman for Sports, highlighted the city's commitment to creating more accessible swimming spots, especially given the increasing demand witnessed in previous summers.

He stated that the initiative reflects Antwerp’s strategy to improve public spaces and promote outdoor activities for its residents.

The initiative progresses alongside the city's broader objectives to enhance recreational facilities and encourage public engagement in healthy activities.

As the swimming season continues, Antwerp anticipates increased participation among residents and visitors alike.
