Antwerp Introduces Two-Way Trams Amid Transport Network Upgrades

The new tram system aims to enhance public transport efficiency without official announcement or celebration.
ANTWERP – Two-way trams have commenced operations in Antwerp, marking a significant development in the city’s public transport infrastructure.

This launch occurred without an official announcement or celebration, departing from the traditional fanfare typically associated with new tram introductions in the area.

The new trams, known as ‘StadsLijner,’ were designed to operate without the need for turning loops, enabling them to travel in both directions via dual driver’s posts, which presents a notable advancement in tram technology.

However, despite their capability, the new model currently operates primarily on line 1, utilizing reversing loops for direction changes.

Prior to this, six vintage two-way trams had been operated on line 12, borrowed from Ghent but are expected to return soon.

Eric Heylen of Trein Tram Bus highlighted the potential effectiveness of the two-way tram system, stating that it could facilitate commuting between the left bank of the River Scheldt and Groenplaats, providing a necessary public transport link amid ongoing developments.

Planned extensions to tram line 8, which aims to connect Astrid to Groenplaats via Nationale Bank, might enhance the service options for passengers.

However, initial proposals by De Lijn to implement the two-way tram system have been postponed, as stated by Ann Schoubs, Director General of De Lijn.

Her remarks underlined that advanced alternatives would better serve future transport needs.

The introduction of the two-way trams may also reignite discussions regarding a new tram loop in Deurne-Zuid, which has faced criticism from local organizations who suggest that the two-way tram could effectively replace the proposed loop.

The Stadslijner trams are over 30 meters long, capable of accommodating up to 180 passengers, and are designed with features aimed at improving accessibility for individuals with limited mobility.

The design eliminates the need for turning loops, potentially increasing the reliability of service during construction projects or interruptions, thereby reducing delays.

Antwerp’s public transport strategy aligns with the city’s ‘Smart Ways to Antwerp’ initiative, which promotes a multimodal approach to mobility.

This initiative encourages the integration of walking, cycling, public transport, and shared mobility solutions while enhancing the overall travel experience through accessible and efficient systems.

Integrated ticketing and real-time information are fundamental aspects of this transport strategy.
